Man Enough: Undefining Masculinity

Man Enough: Undefining Masculinity

There's been a lot of talk lately about redefining masculinity and questioning traditional male gender roles.

While it can be an uncomfortable topic, I believe it's a critical conversation if we want to create a society where people of all genders can thrive.

In this week's episode of The Fit Mess, we dig into this issue with actor and author Justin Baldoni, who wrote the book “Man Enough: Undefining My Masculinity.”

Here are 3 ideas, 2 quotes, and 1 question related to rethinking masculinity:

3 Ideas

I. Many men feel trapped between who society says they should be versus who they authentically are deep down. It takes courage to bring your full humanity to all areas of life.

II. Boys absorb rigid ideas about masculinity from an early age that promote shame and emotional disconnect. We can change this by embracing non-traditional strengths like vulnerability.

III. Have compassion for older generations of men who were also victims of restrictive concepts of masculinity, even as we redefine it for younger men today.

2 Quotes

I. "We must be willing to embrace the qualities that society deems feminine and not judge each other or police each other for having them." - Justin Baldoni

II. "Your masculinity is a constant comparison with external factors that are not in your control. And as we know, that is a recipe for disaster." - Justin Baldoni

1 Question

What would it mean for you to bring your full humanity - strengths and vulnerabilities, masculine and feminine - to all areas of your life?
